There was a Christmas Vacation story in National Lampoon Magazine (I was a subscriber) years before they made the movie. Cat ate the Christmas lights, pooped them out (partially) and was strung up. I forget the author's name right now, but that guy wrote some really good stuff for that mag.

Had to look it up. It was the late John Hughes - the guy that did the Brat Pack films like The Breakfast Club, etc.
